What Is 316Ti Stainless Steel Pipe?

316Ti is a titanium-stabilized version of the 316 family of austenitic stainless steels. The addition of titanium helps stabilize the carbon in the material — particularly relevant when the material is exposed to elevated temperatures where sensitization and intergranular corrosion can become concerns. Key characteristics of 316Ti include:

Why Is Titanium Added to 316Ti?

The defining characteristic of 316Ti stainless steel is titanium stabilization. When certain stainless steels are exposed to particular temperature ranges for sufficient periods, chromium carbides can precipitate at grain boundaries. This can reduce the chromium available locally and potentially increase susceptibility to intergranular corrosion.

Titanium has a strong affinity for carbon. In a properly controlled 316Ti composition, titanium preferentially forms stable titanium carbides, helping reduce the availability of carbon for chromium-carbide formation. This is one of the reasons 316Ti pipe may be selected for certain elevated-temperature and welded applications.
